One example of such a system is a long haul, DWDM optical transmission system. Optical amplifiers are used in a long haul transmission system to compensate for the non-linear effects of fiber. The optical amplifiers are used to increase the power of the signal so that the signal can be transmitted through an optical fiber over long distances. Multiple amplifiers and fibers can be arranged in a link along a transmission path. For example, optical amplifiers can be placed periodically along the transmission path to compensate for a loss of optical power in the transmission path and fibers can be connected to the input side of the optical amplifiers. The output of an optical amplifier can be connected to any one of several fibers and thus a single input optical signal can be sent to multiple optical amplifiers and fibers, which are separated along the transmission path.
FIG. 1 illustrates one example of such a system. In this example, two optical amplifiers 10, 12 are connected in series and each optical amplifier is connected to a single fiber 14. The input to the first optical amplifier 10 is a single input optical signal 16 which is a single input optical signal. The input signal 16 is an optical signal containing information to be transmitted. The signal 16 is supplied to the optical amplifier 10 from an input port 18. The output of the first optical amplifier 10 is an amplified optical signal 20 which is supplied to an output port 22. The amplified signal 20 is then received by the second optical amplifier 12 and supplied to a second output port 24.
An optical signal 26 is received at the second input port 28. The optical signal 26 is an optical signal containing information to be transmitted. The optical signal 26 is supplied to the second optical amplifier 12 and received at the second output port 24. The output of the second optical ac619d1d87
