John Constantine is tried for his role in causing an earthquake that killed twelve people including his wife. He is found guilty of negligence and sentenced to death by electrocution, but he mysteriously survives after touching an electric fence surrounding the jail cell. He is brought to the outskirts of Los Angeles, where he meets Manny (played by Robert Petkoff), a drug-addicted, homeless man who becomes his assistant. Constantine then goes to the library and meets with an elderly librarian named Sara (Laura Martin). Sara tells him about the "World's Largest Organ", which contains human souls; however, it can only be accessed via an ancient ritual. When Constantine offers to take Sara out for ice cream, she refuses, announcing that she is afraid of him. Constantine sets off on his own with Manny as his guide for this journey. Along the way, he experiences two more deaths. When Constantine tries to bring Sara into the library, she rejects him, calling him a "dark man". He then goes to her home and demands her to take him inside. He questions Sara about Manny's whereabouts and decides to stay at her place for the evening. Sara has another visitor, who turns out to be Manny who reveals that he had been trying to find John all over town. The next morning, Sara surrenders herself to Constantine for his protection against Manny. Later, Constantine tells Manny about how people fear him because of an incident in his childhood when he had visited a church with his friends on Halloween night. Constantine had been scared by the organ played within the church, which sounded like a demon's cry, and his friends had laughed at him. Meanwhile, Manny has gone to a place called "Hell", where he meets a woman named Lilith (played by Barbara Hershey), who takes him on a journey back to the past. Constantine later senses that Manny is in trouble and gets himself purposely arrested for vagrancy after trying to help him. In prison he passes out from exhaustion and is visited by an angel who tells him of his preordained purpose as a warrior against evil as well as being reborn from death. cfa1e77820
